These tests can also help differentiate acute from chronic liver diseases, or hepatitis from cholestasis (biliary obstruction).<\/p>\n<p><strong>The most common blood tests include the followings:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Serum Bilirubin<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; High bilirubin levels usually indicate obstructed bile flow, or a defect in processing of bile by the liver. Bilirubin is produced by the liver and excreted in the bile.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Serum Albumin<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Albumin is a protein produced by the liver, and lower levels of albumin are often associated with many chronic liver disease.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"btClear btSeparator topSmallSpaced noBorder\" ><hr><\/div><header class=\"header btClear medium btDash bottomDash  btAccentDash\" ><div class=\"dash\"><h3><span class=\"headline\">Blood Tests for Liver Transplantation\r<br><\/span><\/h3><\/div><\/header><div class=\"btClear btSeparator topExtraSmallSpaced noBorder\" ><hr><\/div><div class=\"btText\" ><p><strong>Serum Alkalane Phosphatase<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Higher levels of alkalane phosphatase (an enzyme in the bile) often indicate obstructed bile flow, liver damage or some types of cancer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Serum aminotransferase (transaminase, SGOT, SGPT)\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 These enzymes are released by damaged liver cells. It contains ALT (SGPT) and AST (SGOT). Their level (especially ALT) is higher in case of hepatitis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prothrombin time (PT)\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 This test measures the clotting time for the blood. Blood clotting requires vitamin K and a protein (prothrombin) produced by the liver.
