What is Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG)?

If there is constriction or congestion in the coronary arteries, then heart muscles are inadequately oxygenated, thus leading to decrease in heart performance. People complain of chest pain, and risk heart attack is increased.

What is “bypass”?

In Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG), obstructed coronary arteries are replaced by vessels taken from different parts of the body. CABG, defined also as “bridging surgery”, provides sufficient blood supply to relevant heart muscles.

How do we perform CABG?

Coronary bypass surgery can be performed in two forms:

• In a stopped heart: The heart is completely stopped and the circulation in the body is maintained by a heart pump, while bridging the vessels is performed. The heart pump assumes the duties of the patient’s lungs and heart during surgery, allowing blood to be pumped into the brain and other vital organs.
• In the working heart: Surgery is performed without stopping the heart and the need for a heart pump. For bridging, vessels such as the patient’s leg artery, forearm artery, chest artery are used.
